Before answering “Why Mineral?”, let’s talk about the importance of wearing sunscreen, period. Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States, and worldwide. Did you know:

  • One in five Americans will develop skin cancer by the age of 70!
  • More than two people die of skin cancer in the U.S. every hour.
  • Having five or more sunburns doubles the risk of melanoma.

So, sunscreen is far more than a beach bag essential; it should be part of everyone’s daily healthcare regimen.

So, why mineral sunscreen? Simple. It’s good for you! Unlike chemical sunscreens, which absorb into your skin and then absorb the sun’s rays, mineral sunscreens sit on the surface of your skin, deflecting the sun’s rays like a shield. LĀ SOL Clear mineral sunscreen protects your skin from the harmful rays of the sun in a way that’s healthy for you AND the environment. That’s something that most popular brands cannot claim. Let’s dig into these topics a bit more.

You’ve probably heard to avoid sunscreens with oxybenzoneand avobenzone; both ingredients rank as significantly toxic on the EWG’s Skin Deeplist*. Oxybenzone may interfere with the endocrine system (which regulates biological processes like metabolism, growth and development, sexual function and reproduction, thyroid function, and more). Avobenzone could result in kidney and liver dysfunction and nervous system disorders. Other frequently used ingredients, homosalate, octisalate and octocrylene, are potentially hazardous to your health. LĀ SOL Clear mineral sunscreen does not contain chemicals (see below for the list of ingredients and their respective EWG rating).

Now let’s talk about the environment. It may surprise you to know that 14 tons of sunscreen end up in oceans around the world each year! What’s worse is that the chemicals contained in typical (non-mineral) sunscreens absorb into coral reefs, damaging marine life and bleaching the reefs. The effects of these chemicals are believed to be potentially devastating. Many states in the U.S. (including California) and countries are considering banning sunscreens with harsh chemicals. Hawaii became the first state (in 2018) to pass a bill banning such sunscreens, followed by Key West, Florida, and the Virgin Islands.

We hope to have educated you about the basics of why sunscreen is so important to your health, and why mineral sunscreen is the best choice for you and the environment. After two years of research and interviewing more than 40 labs to find a product that meets our standards, we’re proud to offer you LĀ SOL Clear mineral sunscreen. It’s translucent, hydrating, lightweight, fragrance-free, gentle enough for sensitive skin, and a superb product for daily use. It won’t even run in your eyes when you sweat or swim. Everyone wins!
